Fear, Desire, Hope

A short film inspired by an essay on "How To Live"

“We are never at home, we are always beyond. Fear, desire, hope, project us toward the future and steal from us the consideration of what is, to busy us with what will be, even when we shall no longer be."

- Michel de Montaigne, The Complete Essays

Overview

Fear, Desire, Hope, is a short film that was inspired by one of Montaigne's essays about "How To Live". According to him, our lives are constantly driven by one of three things: Fear, Desire and Hope. I wanted to create a short film that expressed these feelings, but also offer a reminder to be present and slow down.

After creating a storyboard and filming the required shots, the shots were put together in one video. The video was then turned into contact sheets, which were then printed out. The patina was added with water colour paint. Once the watercolour painted contact sheets were dry, they were then scanned and the final video was put together from the scanned contact sheets, frame by frame.
